3D Chat World
The availability of the 3D chat world is exploding in numbers on the internet. One of the most popular, Second Life, has over 25,000 users online at any one time. This amazing number is reflective of the growing popularity of having a second life online.
The Virtual Realm
The 3D chat world is the natural extension of the chat rooms of the 1990’s. Like chat rooms, 3D virtual worlds allow users to communicate in real time. But that is not all. These virtual worlds are actual environments where users can work, shop, have fun, attend school, and interact.
Second Life is considered to be a pioneer in virtual world circles. Internet expert Cat Witt says that the concepts employed by Linden Lab when creating Second Life were groundbreaking. “This small company decided to let users build the environment. It was literally unheard of – to give away control in such an obvious manner. It was a real risk but it paid off,” stated Witt in an online interview. In second life you can not only create the world but also own your creations.
The Pay Off
The real payoff is for the millions of 3D chat world users. With Second Life users now have a space to create their own second life. They can create an extension of their own life or create a totally new and different one. It has become so popular that a question at many get-togethers is “Who are you in your second life?”
A space mix of fantasy and reality is probably the best you can create, people like realistic places similar to their real life, but at the same time they want to take advantage of the fantastic possibilities of these virtual worlds.
The 3D chat world depends on various methods for chatting. The most basic method is the instant message (IM/Call). This allows users to talk in real time. A message is typed by a user and it immediately shows up on the screen and it’s seen by other avatars around you. Second Lifers can also leave a message to other users not in-world, the message will be seen by these users once they log into Second Life.
Second Life expanded the simple chat to include a whisper, a say, and a shout. A whisper is a quite conversation that is only heard by those closest to your avatar in the virtual world, up to 10m/33 feet. A say can be heard by avatars within 20m/66 feet and a shout covers a 100m/328 feet area. In addition, there is a region say option, only available to region owners, carrying your comment across an entire region.
Another way of communication is through voice chat. With the powerful voice chat module and a microphone you can: Communicate with other users’ in-world with your own real life voice, list all avatars around you using voice chat, switch between voice and text chat modes and see your current voice channel.
Why should you join a 3d virtual world? Many users join for the social aspects virtual reality provides. It is an awesome place to make friends, have a cocktail, and attend a rock concert. Other members utilize the space to further their education by taking classes offered by their virtual university or school.
Big businesses and corporations have a large presence in Second Life. Many businesses use Second Life in an attempt to increase branding. They may offer users free products or services. Charitable organizations can also be found in the virtual world. These organizations get lots of exposure and support from Second Lifers. Government agencies, departments and military organizations are also present in Second Life: Training staff, doing simulations, prototyping and reaching out to the community.
