Have you wondered how to make your own animated avatars? To intermingle and communicate in the virtual online world of Second Life you must first need to have your own avatar. Your avatar will represent you in the virtual environment.

Avatars in Second Life

Second Life is the internet’s largest social experiment with over 1 million active users. Members attend university classes, network, buy and sell land, open stores and party in the virtual realm. The first step to joining in on this exciting community is to have your own animated avatar.

• Step One: Become a Second Life member. Fill out a registration form on the site selecting a starting look for your avatar and wait for a notice to be sent to your email address. Once you receive this notice you can respond in the affirmative, confirming your email, and you will become a new member. You are now ready to download and install the Second Life viewer/interface in your computer.
• Step Two: After signing in for the first time, you will find in the Second Life viewer/interface a simple design process called “Appearance” which allows you to customize your avatar. Animated avatars can be literal translations of your true self or extreme non-human characters found only in your imagination.

Customizing your avatar involves choosing hair color, eye color, skin color, body shape, clothing, and more to ensure your creation is one of a kind. Once completed, you will be ready to explore the virtual world with the new “you”. As an avatar you will meet other avatars, chat, join groups, socialize, attend concerts, play games and enjoy a host of other activities.

Virtual Worlds

As you spend time exploring Second Life you may choose to add to your avatar. You can change an avatars appearance with a new hair style, makeup or with new clothing. Clothing stores and malls can be found on many streets in Second Life and with a few Linden dollars you can purchase an entire new wardrobe to fit your persona. You can also find lots of clothing freebie locations in-world.

Jewelry stores with lots of bling, designer shoe stores for shoe lovers, fancy tattoos and piercings, and trendy fashion boutiques are all open and waiting to help you create a truly original look. Talented fashion designers and other creative souls make their fabulous wares available to other members for this purpose.

Within the virtual world of Second Life animated avatars can be anything and do anything that mimic the real world and much more!. Your only limitation is your resourceful mind. New members are often amazed at all the different types of avatars they see upon entering this incredible virtual environment including mainly: Humans, animals, anime, fantasy and sci-fi, furries (mix of human and animal), monsters, and robots.
