Is it a Game?

Second Life and other games like it cannot truly be classified as games. You don’t win anything and don’t have to compete against anyone. You basically exist and do anything you would in the real world and much more. The name “game” is used universally to describe Second Life for lack of a better term.

But you can “play” games within the Second Life virtual world. Role Playing Games are one of Second Life’s most popular in-worlds and many users take different roles (vampire, warrior, magician, detective, cyborg,…) to play these games (conquering a fortress, battling enemies, looking for a treasure, investigating a murder and doing anything you can imagine). There are other types of games in Second Life played with friends on a regular basis (scavenger hunts, strategy, sports, table games…). Most of the games of chance (casinos) are banned in Second Life nowadays but you can find some legal lottery type games (Sploder, Zyngo,…).

But Second Life is so much more than just gaming. Linden Lab says that they purposely left this online world mostly blank when the site went live. “We wanted users to invent the world themselves,” says a Second Life creator. So, game or not, no one is really concerned with what you call this virtual world as long as you have fun and are productive when visiting.

The Avatar

Second Life and virtual world games like Second Life require you to communicate and interact through the use of avatars. Your avatar will be the means by which you talk to and make friends, sell your wares, attend learning classes, and exist in this virtual world. Once you have created a user name and signed onto Second Life you will be able to customize your basic avatar. Second Life and games like it offer users an easy to follow module to help them in this creation process. Your avatar can be a realistic representation of yourself or the fantasy of your dreams.
