Second Life Avatar

The Second Life avatar is a virtual world resident who populates the Second Life world. Your avatar will be the means by which you communicate, work, and exist in this virtual world.

After signing up for your Second Life account you will be able to create your Second Life avatar. This virtual representation of yourself can be an accurate portrayal of you or it can be a fantasized person or creature. Many users choose to create mythological and strange creatures, off-the-wall humans, animals or robots for their avatar.

Shape It Up

Second Life offers users a very powerful module to help them create their own avatar. You will be first given a basic avatar, a human figure with for example jeans and a white tee, which you will have the opportunity to modify later.

To enter the editing laboratory where you can individualize your avatar you should right click on the basic avatar and click on “appearance”. Two choices will pop up-“body parts” or “clothes”. Body parts will allow you to choose the shape of your avatar and should be completed before clothes are added.

Determining the shape of your avatar will include deciding on height, weight, waist size and many other body options like head, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, chin, torso and legs. The shape and size of each category is manipulated using sliders, there are many options inside each category. Using these sliders will give your avatar its unique shape, size, thickness, stature and final appearance.

By keeping the sliders in the middle range you will create an average sized avatar. For a more extreme look you can play around with your choices before making a final decision.

Pieces and Parts

Your avatar can also have personalized hair, skin and eyes. You will once again use sliders to choose the perfect skin tone, hair and eyes color, adjust makeup, and add details to your avatar.

Each piece and part of your avatar can be tailored to your design. Even small details such as tattoos, eyebrows, blush, and fingernail polish can be customized in the Second Life avatar creation module.

The Avatar Fashionista

After creating the body for your Second Life avatar and adding personal details it is time to get dressed. For your first outing into Second Life you will have to use what is available in the module or in your Inventory Library. Once you have earned money in the virtual Second Life world you can shop in any of the numerous Second Life clothing stores for high fashion, vintage, and other interesting clothing options. You have also plenty of freebie shops and locations where you can find free or very cheap clothing.

The clothing module allows you to change out of your basic clothes like jeans and white tee. All types of clothing items are available for you to choose from. Shirts, pants, shoes, socks, jackets, gloves, undershirts, underpants and skirts and more can be designed just for your avatar using textures and color. You can even design your own clothing using the building module.

After creating your new persona you must “save” all of your work. After clicking “save” your new Second life avatar is now ready to make his, (or her), debut into the Second Life amazing world of adventures and excitement.
