Second Life Characters

Second Life characters abound in the Second Life virtual world. Take a stroll down any Second Life street and you will see medieval princesses, cartoon characters, mythological creatures, and harridans interacting with corporate business people, sexy clubbers, school teachers, and students. Nowhere else will you find this crazy conglomeration of diverse people socializing and enjoying each other’s company.

The Avatar

The basic character is the avatar. Once you have signed up for a Second Life account you will immediately choose a basic avatar. Later in-world you can modify your basic avatar look to be anything you like. This character will be your virtual representative in the world of Second Life.

Avatars can be realistic or a complete fantasy. Linden Lab, the creators of Second Life, provide an easy module to help you create your perfect Second Life character. You will be able to choose the hair color, eye color, skin color, height, weight, and other physical attributes of your avatar.

Getting to Know You

Once you have created your avatar you are ready to interact with other Second Lifers. It is time to begin exploring this amazing virtual world.

A visit to any Second Life island or mainland will put you right in the middle of the action. You will have the chance to introduce yourself to other Second Lifers and socialize. Look for interesting people in Second Life Showcase where you can find the best locations in-world: Hot spots, arts & culture, education & non-profit, fashion and music. You can have access to the Showcase in-world choosing: Search - Showcase from the bottom menu on the Second Life Viewer interface or screen.

A Character Parade

Walking through the Second Life virtual world will seem like a Second Life parade. You will have fun discerning what different avatars represent. Many users dress their characters in native garb to honor their ancestors. Others celebrate their favorite eras or pay homage to beloved book characters. Some are fully realistic representations of themselves in Real Life (RL) or what they would like to be in RL, others are totally different than conventional humans and are included in different lifestyle Groups (furries, nekos, goth, vampires, gorean …). Everybody is welcomed no matter their sex orientation, physical appearance, language speaking, and interest’s in Second Life. There are places for everybody to enjoy this big virtual world.

You can be anybody you want to be in Second Life as the many different Second Life characters demonstrate. A shy extrovert guy can be an outgoing club girl in her “second Life”. A staid business man can explore his artistic abilities.

First impressions count and you will want to keep this truth in mind when you create your avatar. If you plan to open a Second Life business you may want your avatar to reflect your business. Are you opening a tanning salon or a shop selling beach outfit? You can dress your avatar in a bikini. Will you be selling your original artwork? This profession will let you have more freedom when designing your Second Life character.

Whatever you choose to do with your Second Life character, make sure to have fun. That’s what Second Life is all about and your character is your entrée into this exciting community.
