Second Life Clothes

Every virtual avatar in Second Life needs Second Life clothes. Clothing can be created by individual users with the free modules available on the Second Life viewer/interface. Clothing can also be purchased “in world” from fashion designers who have opened a virtual clothing store or from the Marketplace, the virtual store of the Second Life website.

You Be the Designer

When first becoming a member of Second Life you will be directed to choose the gender and the starting look of your avatar and customize it later in-world. This avatar is your virtual representative in space. And, just as in the real world, your avatar will need to be dressed. Second Life clothing is easy to design – even for beginners.

During the customization process of your avatar, you will be able to choose items to dress him/her, (or it), using design modules for Second Life Clothes. Each module provides you with the building blocks needed to create a distinctive wardrobe for your virtual world representative.

The Second Life clothes modules in the “appearance” option of the Second Life Viewer/Interface, will allow you to choose from 9 different pieces including: shirts, pants, shoes, socks, jackets, gloves, undershirts, underpants and skirts. Each item can be added one at a time to your avatar until you have the look you want.

To add a shirt to your avatar you simply click the shirt option and then scroll through the different pattern and color options. You can try several on to see how they look before making your final choice. Pants, skirts, and much more can be added to your avatar using this method. You can customize your clothes (changing color, fabrics, size and other features) or create a new piece of clothing. The new piece created will be found in the clothing folder of your inventory.

Once you have had the opportunity to explore the Second Life environment you will be astounded at some of the fabulous clothing worn by avatars. Full on glamour, bling, sexiness, punk, goth, sports gear, hi-tech and much more can be seen walking the streets of this virtual world.

Where do all these clothes come from? Many of the unique Second Life clothing items you see in world are purchased in Second Life clothing stores. Creative fashion designers develop a line of clothing and open shop on one of Second Life’s many islands. Anyone is welcome to shop and purchase their designs. Some fashion designs are really unique and can only be purchased in the original designer’s shop, others can be found in many affiliate shops and malls throughout the virtual world.

Second Life clothing can also be created by individual users using downloadable templates. Linden Lab, the creator of Second Life, provides template sets and Adobe Photoshop resources to members who wish to create their own garments. There are templates for skirts, jackets, gloves, and even socks to choose from when designing your own clothing. You have also several clothing tutorials and help resources available for creating your own clothing designs.
