The Second Life game is an internet platform that allows users to build virtual worlds where they can play and communicate in 3D. The Second Life community has become the most popular virtual environment on the internet. Users from around the world interact daily with the Second Life game.

Taking the First Step

To become a resident in the Second Life virtual world you must first sign up for your free Second Life account. After the initial signup you will be directed to choose a user name for your avatar. An easy –to- use module will walk you through the steps required to choose your basic 3D avatar that will represent you in Second Life.

Your avatar can be later an accurate representation of you or you can create a fictional persona for your Second Life game avatar. Once you have chosen your basic avatar you will be allowed to travel in and out of the different virtual worlds in Second Life. You can visit cities, natural landscapes, museums, spaceships, amusement parks, fantasy castles, and much more right from your desktop. All of these worlds have been created by the minds of creative Second Lifers.

Getting to Know You

After you have created your avatar you will attend an orientation session at Help Island. You will go to the Island and be joined by other new Second Lifers and Second Life game mentors. Orientation allows you to discover the basics of the game.

Orientation will allow you to begin to communicate with other Second Lifers. You will discover how to interact in the virtual world and learn tips and tricks of the game. You will have the chance to update your basic avatar at this point in the game before you enter the virtual Second World.

Look Mom, I Can Fly: Living in a Virtual World

Once you have entered the virtual world of Second Life you will be faced with many options. You can walk, run, fly and teleport (yes – teleport), to get from one place to another. You can also use all kinds of transportation vehicles and devices. You will be able to visit incredible environments and choose from a plethora of activities such as ballroom dancing, skydiving, vampire chasing and outer-space exploration to name just a few. Second Life is a social network and you can meet other residents while participating in many of these virtual activities.

Second Life residents can earn money and spend money. Linden Dollars are the basis for the Second Life virtual economy and marketplace and you will find clothing stores, nightclubs, malls and other offerings for spending your cash. Residents can find virtual jobs to earn Linden Dollars.

Hush-Hush

New Second Lifers are advised to spend time exploring this amazing virtual environment and meeting other game players. Your avatar is a resident in the Second Life world. As a resident you can communicate with other residents in several different ways.

• Global Chat (IM/Call) is similar to text messaging or instant messaging and allows for confidential conversations and messages between residents.
• Shout mode lets everyone in the area see your text or conversation.
• Say mode (normal) allows those near you in the virtual world to “hear” your conversation.
• Whisper mode is another method to have private communication with a Second Life game resident.
• Voice Chat lets you use your own voice to speak with other residents of this virtual world.

In the Millions

Second Life has over ten million registered residents. One you become a resident you will be able to play the game, reside in the virtual Second Life game world, and live out your fantasies.

Along with going to work, building virtual worlds, having fun, running businesses and communicating with other residents Second Lifers have the chance to make a difference in the real world. Many non-profit and charity organizations have islands in the Second Life game for residents to visit and participate in charitable activities that affect the existent world.
