Second Life Map
Second Life map links, commonly known as SLurls (Second Life Uniform Resource Locators, or Second Life addresses) can be used to travel from place to place within the gigantic world of Second Life. They are clickable like any other web link on the internet. And like any other link, you can include them in email and post them on blogs. Anyone who has Second Life (SL) installed on their computer can click on the SLurl and be instantly transported to its location within Second Life. You can think of
SLurls
as portals between real life and Second Life. Second Life map region
The SLurl represents a specific address within a map region of Second Life. And since there are close to 30,000 total map regions, using the SLurl to move from place to place is by far the easiest way to travel. To give you an idea of how huge SL is, a Second Life map region is defined as 256 by 256 meters square and 4,096 meters high of buildable area (and remember there are almost 30,000 of these). It can contain approximately 15,000 prims, which are the basic virtual 3-D building units of all objects within Second Life (SL). And all of this virtual real estate is hosted on about 8,000 servers. World Map of Second Life With a virtual world this vast, becoming comfortable with the maps is a mandatory inworld survival skill. Using the
World Map of Second Life
, you can choose from two views: terrain or objects. The "terrain" view only shows the SL basic land masses, without the details of objects that have been built on them. The "object" view shows everything that has been built below the virtual height limit of 400 meters. Trees, lakes, houses and business will all be visible when using the object view. Avatars on the World Map Avatars also show up in the World Map. Each
avatar
is indicated by a green dot. As you zoom in and out, you can get an idea of just how populated Second Life really is. From a high aerial vantage point, the mainland welcome areas show up almost solid green, until you zoom in and begin to see the separate green dots of individual avatars. The visual experience is similar to flying into a large metropolitan area at night. Send yourself a postcard When you find a place within SL that you enjoy visiting, it's a good idea to make a Second Life map link and save it so that you can return or share it with others. If you don't take this step, it's easy to lose track of your favorite locations and you may not be able to find them again. The easiest way to create a SLurl is to click the Snapshot button in your viewer's toolbar, and send yourself a postcard. The picture and the link should be in your email.
