Virtual fantasy worlds like the popular Second Life are the new wave of internet communities. Not only can you chat with others in this unique cyber-land, you can live out an entire “second life”. Anything that is possible in the real world is possible in this virtual fantasy world and much more!

Have to Haves

To get started in Second Life there are a few musts you have to have. Obviously, you will need access to a computer but beyond that you will need a mouse, a cable or DSL internet connection, a keyboard, an account, and the Second Life software. Second Life software can be downloaded from the Second Life virtual site. You must be, at least, 13 to download the software and create a Second Life account. Teens can only access to Second Life General locations (G), while Moderate (M) and Adult (A) locations are restricted to adults (+18).

Have to Know

The creators of Second Life, Linden Lab, have made it very easy to sign up, customize your avatar, interact with other second lifers and navigate their world. You do not have to be a techno whiz to have a great time in virtual fantasy worlds.

Basic computer and internet knowledge is a big help when you first set up your account and start your second life adventure. You will need to know some basic features like computer and browsing configuration and internet searching tools.

Linden Lab has provided easy to access tutorials that explain everything about Second Life. These tutorials will walk you through creating your virtual representation of yourself, your avatar, to buying and owning land in the community. You will also learn how to create things, solve problems and anything you need to live your “Second Life”.

Virtual fantasy worlds usually offer free and paid memberships. Second Life offers a free, basic membership package and a paid, premium membership. The paid membership comes with extra perks such as the ability to buy 512 square meters of land directly from Linden Lab to get you started, without paying any monthly maintenance fees and a 300 linden dollars (second life currency) weekly stipend.

You can do whatever you want in virtual worlds. Second Lifers meet and hang out, go to dance clubs, hold jobs, create wonderful things, attend classes, open businesses, play games, travel and explore this virtual world. Nightclubs and bars are the popular places to hang out in the entire virtual realm. They are a great place to meet people and get acquainted with the ins and outs of virtual life. The several role playing games available in-world are also very popular and many second lifers enjoy playing them. Remember, virtual worlds are anything you want them to be. You can complete a degree through distance learning or sell your magnificent clothing collections for real world profit – if you can do it in the real world chances are you can do it in virtual fantasy worlds such as Second Life.
