Virtual Online World

After you become a member of your new virtual online world, give yourself plenty of time to acclimate to it. In fact, if it is your first time visiting one, then creating and using your avatar could take a few hours. If you are not used to video games and their controls, moving your virtual arms and legs will be awkward at first. If you come prepared with your sense of humor you will have fun while you learn.

Instruction Modules

Virtual Online World

The interfaces might look complicated, but don't worry. Most of the online instruction modules will give you step-by-step guidance, like this Second Life quick start guide. With a little practice, you will soon be navigating with ease. Just take it slow and practice for 15 or 20 minutes every day, if you're short on time. Of course, if you have an afternoon or a whole day to play around, go ahead and use it to improve your expertise at the control panel.

What to Expect

You will first have to learn to move your avatar around. Depending on the virtual online world you choose, simulation can range from cartoonish to so sophisticated that it looks quite real. If you become part of Second Life, for instance, your avatar will look very realistic (even if you choose fantasy characteristics) and it will be able to perform complex tasks, so the learning curve is a bit steep at the start. But taking the time to learn how to move with ease and precision will enhance your online experience.

Learning How to Move Your Avatar

For instance, in Second Life, you will need to learn how to move your avatar around to interact with your environment as well as with objects so that you can walk around your house and sit down in your chairs. You will be able to take your virtual pet for a walk or go swimming in a lake. And if you want to chat and interact with other avatars in real time you can learn to do that, too.

Enjoying Your New World

You will be able to handle money and pay for drinks in the nightclubs, as well as dance with friends. You will be able to take a stroll and window shop, and you can also fly around if you get the urge. With so much versatility to make your experience rich with movement options, it will not be hard to motivate yourself to take the time to learn how to become efficient with moving your avatar. And before you know it, you will be easily navigating your avatar in your virtual online world, enjoying the sights, participating in sports activities, going to parties or creating online businesses that you never before dreamed of.
