The First Step

Access to virtual reality sites like Second Life requires a computer, a modem/router, an ISP (Internet Service Provider), a Second Life account, and the Second Life software. The software needed to access the site and enter the virtual world is available at the Second Life website. Anyone 18 years old or older can download and join the virtual site.

Younger users can download Second Life but must have parental permission before doing so. Second Life for teens is basically a second life without the adult content and with a very restrictive and screened adult access, a safe virtual environment for young people between 13 and 17 years old.

The Ins and Outs

Linden Lab, the people behind Second Life, has designed an easy interface for users to navigate. It is simple to create an account, design your avatar, and explore virtual reality online. No advanced rocket science degree is required, thank goodness!

A little tech knowledge will prove useful of course. You will need to understand how to access the internet and how different controls operate. You will also need to know how to install the Second Life software onto your computer and how to use it.

The great thing about virtual reality and Second Life is that there is always someone there to help. Memberships

There are 2 types of memberships in Second Life – free and paid. A free membership is just that, free. You can access the virtual reality online world and enjoy communicating with others and experiencing most of what the world has to offer.

A paid membership is considered a premium membership. This option gives the user more access to the site. Premium members can buy and sell land among other things that are not available with a free membership. A paid membership who owns at least half a region (32.768 sqm) of mainland enters into the concierge level with additional features including 24 hours/365 days live chat, exclusive email and phone support (Toll-free for USA and Canada).

Once you have joined Second Life you are ready to go in world. Almost anything you do in normal life can be done in Second Life, and so much more. You can learn, travel, create, and work. You can meet people, party, build a home or open a shop. Virtual reality online allows you to be what you want to be and live out your dreams.
