Virtual Reality Websites
Virtual reality websites like Second Life are the next wave in online education. These virtual environments are allowing schools to set up shop and offer classes, enable study groups to form, and permit teachers to network in a user friendly space.
Online Learning
Online education is the logical successor to pen and paper correspondence courses. Not too long ago distance education was only offered through the mail to college students and was limited to around 10 credits per student. Today, an entire degree can be obtained through online classes.
Colleges and universities from the four corners of the world offer distance education via the internet. One of the newest places these classes are popping up are on sites like Second Life. Students can become a member of the site, register with their school for a class, and attend that class all from their home.
Harvard and Stanford are only 2 universities offering courses on virtual reality websites. In addition, teachers have the chance to network and students can meet and form study groups in Second Life. The ability to meet in groups in a virtual world makes it easy to get together as often as necessary without a lot of expense or travel time.
Getting Started
It is easy to get started with online education on virtual websites. First, visit a virtual community, like Second Life, and join. Second Life has both free and paid memberships. A free membership will give you access to the classes you will be taking.
During sign up process you will be directed to choose the starting look for your avatar. Your avatar is a virtual ‘you’, represented in virtual space. These cartoon-like characters are easy to design and customize in-world. Second Life has a user friendly module to walk you through the process. Your avatar will attend classes and interact with others.
Before attending your first class you must also sign up with your school. After you are accepted in the class you will be sent a numerical code that allows you entry to the class on the website.
Students currently attending a university can apply for their school’s classes offered online. If you are not currently registered at a college you must do so before using their Second Life services.
Middle schools and high schools are also beginning to see the advantages of Second Life and virtual reality websites. Several secondary institutions have moved into the virtual realm and offer tutoring, classes, and study forums. The use of sites like Second Life for educational purposes has not even begun to reach its potential.
There’s just no doubt that in the future, virtual reality websites will be used more and more to increase access to education and learning forums. Be ready to try new sophisticated, exciting and useful eLearning platforms like Second Life.
