Virtual Reality World
A virtual reality world is a 3 dimensional computer generated representation of the real world. In a virtual world users are able to interact and communicate with other users. Interaction occurs in real time and allows users to communicate instantly with one another.
Communications and interactions in a virtual reality world require the use of an avatar. When you sign up for a virtual world experience you will be asked to create a 3D representation of yourself. This representation is your avatar.
Your avatar can be as creative as you desire. Some users prefer a realistic avatar that resembles them in every way. Other users create avatars that look like they would in their fantasies. Still other users create avatars based completely in fantasy; mythological and strange creatures are very popular avatars.
You’re In
Once you have created your avatar you will gain admittance to the virtual world. Spend some time walking around and getting to know other avatars and the environment. It is suggested that you become familiar with the virtual environment before making big decisions in the virtual world.
Most virtual worlds are set up for interaction with other avatars and the environment. Your avatar can communicate with other avatars using text or speech. Both forms of communication are instantaneous.
Virtual users usually have the ability to manipulate their virtual environment. In the popular world Second Life users can mimic the real world in many ways. A user’s avatar can get a job, buy land, date, eat, dance, and build buildings. If you, the user, are creative your avatar can be creative. Users can have their avatar perform in a nightclub or have a gallery showing of their artwork. There are many Second Life users who design and sell clothes in the virtual world.
Virtual Etiquette
The rules of behavior in an online world “netiquette” are similar to the rules of etiquette in the real world. It is always a great idea to be polite. “Please” and “thank you” will be greatly appreciated by other avatars.
As you will be communicating in real time you will try to avoid talking over someone. If someone is having a conversation with an avatar you wish to speak to you should better wait for the avatar to be free. Chances are you will be invited to join the original conversation.
There has been negative publicity concerning the safety of the virtual reality world. Cyber-stalkers, virtual criminals, and others have taken advantage of these virtual environments. If you notice someone having a very inappropriate conversation or posting harmful content it is important to notify the virtual world’s creator. The creator will investigate the claim and if found to be offensive the person will be banned from the sight. In some severe cases the virtual world creator will turn the offender’s information in to authorities.
Virtual worlds can be fabulous and fun. It is important to be careful and never give out personal information in a virtual world. Take care, be creative, and have fun in the realm of virtual reality worlds!
