Virtual Sex World
It's no secret that Second Life (SL) has a virtual sex world. In large part due to the excellent quality of its 3-D graphics, SL has attracted a large community of residents interested in participating in online sex. In fact, it has an entire continent named Zindra that is dedicated to mature content, and business is booming. Nowhere is that more evident than in
the SL marketplace
-- there are thousands of adult products for sale, including virtual kits that enable your avatar to change gender and genitals.
Entering the adult marketplace
Linden Lab has put a few safeguards in place before residents can furnish their virtual sex world. There are a set of pop up windows that warn visitors that they are about to enter an adult area. You must switch a radio button to "yes" for consent, and accept a disclaimer that you are 18 or older and are entering by choice. But as long as you accept those conditions, you can get in. Cookies must be enabled, so parents are advised to disable them if they have any concerns about their kids deciding to explore without their permission.
Mature equipment

Once inside the mature area of the virtual marketplace, residents who want to participate in the Second Life virtual sex world can equip their avatars with realistic human or fantasy body parts. Costumes,
BDSM accessories,
jewelry, piercings and props can all be purchased in the SL marketplace.
Mature content
For those who want realism that simulates video, there are action scripts for sale in the "mature content" section of the SL marketplace that would rival the most erotic porn films. These types of 3-D animations are not cheap, though. A "builders kit" that would allow someone to start their own business with the animations can be priced at L$20,000 -- that's twenty thousand Linden dollars, for those readers who are not yet residents of Second Life.
According to
Linden Labs' official statements about adult content,
regarding the separation of the adult content from the rest of the community, the decision was made to maintain freedom of expression rather than to curtail it. Since Second Life includes such a diverse population, ranging from casual residents to university and corporate staff members, it makes sense that those most interested in the virtual sex world experience aren't likely to be interested in the same activities as people who are attending a virtual class or meeting. This way, everyone has the opportunity to participate in Second Life exactly in the way they prefer.
